Stop complaining about this.

One of my pet peeves is when someone complains about being the one who does more work than anyone else.

And this comes up quite a bit.

“Adam, you don’t understand. I have to do all the heavy lifting at work because everyone else is too lazy to do their jobs!”

I do understand.

You’re telling me that you have a stronger work ethic than those around you. And you’re not willing to compromise your integrity by “phoning it in” and being as lazy as everyone else.

Am I right?

You have a choice.

You have a choice to make in terms of what you focus on.

You can focus on what’s wrong with everyone else or focus on what’s strong with you.

Which choice makes you feel better?

The most successful people in the world are not losing sleep over how much harder they’re working than everyone around them.

Because that’s exactly what they want.

They embrace it and strive for it because they know that their hard work sets them apart.

- Outwork everyone. -

Outwork everyone in the room.

Every day.

Leave nothing on the table.

And don’t do it to show people up. Do it because the drive to be your best, and to always do your best, is unquenchable.

If you’re the one doing all the heavy lifting, then you’re probably the strongest and most effective person in the room.

And if that’s the case then embrace the reps you’re getting in because as John Maxwell says, “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.”

Choose to grow.

By embracing your reps and getting more confident in what you do, you’ll be in a better position than anyone else to have the strength to rise when change comes.

And when you rise, new opportunities present themselves.

- Accountability. -

“But it makes it harder for me to do my job when they don’t do theirs!”

If someone not doing their job is affecting your ability to do yours, then the focus should be on accountability.

Not who’s doing more.

Holding people accountable to do the work they’ve agreed to do is different than expecting everyone to work at the same level of drive and determination.

Not everyone is going to be able to keep up with you. And that’s okay.

Because the ones who want to keep up with you will fuel your tenacity even more.

- Recognition. -

“But what if I don’t get recognized for all my hard work?”

What if you don’t?

Should that affect your integrity?

If your consistent hard work doesn’t get recognized, then you have the wrong people leading you.

Keep grinding and look for an opportunity to move into a position or organization where you’ll be appreciated.

But by no means should you devalue the work that has your name on it by doing less than you’re capable of.

- Fairness. -

“But it’s not fair for me to get paid the same as everyone else, when I do the most work!”

True.

So, what do you want to do about it?

Because you have three choices:

  1. Ask for a raise.

  2. Quit.

  3. Keep working.

If you ask for a raise and get it, congrats!

If you don’t get the raise, consider choice #2.

“But I can’t quit because I’ve invested too much of myself here, and I need the money.”

Well, pick your hard. It’s hard to stay and feel undervalued. And it’s hard to leave something you’ve invested so much time in and not have the financial resources you need.

Which one is more tolerable for you right now?

“I’ll choose #3 and keep working.”

Great. Lessen your frustrations by taking your focus off everyone else and continue to sharpen your character through your hard work.

And the first chance you get to bounce to a better opportunity, take it.

- Rest. -

By no means am I encouraging you to burn yourself out.

But there’s nothing wrong with burning for yourself, so you can shine.

So now what?

Stop complaining.

Focus on what really matters.

Outwork everyone.

Hold people accountable.

Pick your hard.

Rest.
