This might be the last newsletter I write.

Not because I’m ending it.

But, because there’s a last time for everything.

And many times, our last time isn’t something we plan for.

Or even know is coming.

Think back to when you were a kid hanging with your neighborhood friends. Do you remember the last time you all hung out? And if you do, did you know it would be your last time with them?

One day you’re together having sugar-fueled sleepovers watching horror movies, and the next you’re thinking about how you used to be friends and wondering what happened.

Same goes for your early jobs.

You meet people you love, people you hate, and people you forget. The ones you love feel like they’ll always be there, because if you can navigate the hard days together in a shitty job with difficult customers, you can get through anything together.

Except maybe life.

Because most of the people you clicked with at work when you were younger are no longer a part of yours.

And I bet you didn’t even plan for it.

Today always feels like forever, so that’s how most of us live.

Like we have forever.

But we don’t. And we can make the most of our days by always remembering that.

Now, I’m not just talking about death. Although that’s a part of it, it can also just be those quiet moments when the phone calls stop coming in, the texts, the plans to hang out, the ability to physically do something, or even the ability to financially do something.

Finality isn’t always loud. Many times it’s just a whisper, and we miss hearing it.

A couple of years ago I decided I was going to live like I only had two years left. I was 49 and approaching my 50th birthday. Two years was long enough to live with great intention and see the results. But it’s not long enough to think I’ll always have another chance.

I remember thinking that I don’t want the rest of my life to be through the lens of “One day . . .”

I want it to be through the lens of, “Today . . .”

“It’s not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it.”

-  Seneca

I refuse to waste mine.

And you should too.

Keeping in mind that today could be the last day you do something, will radically change how present you’ll be for the little moments.

Today could be the last day you:

  • Talk to a close friend

  • Have a chance to forgive

  • Kiss someone

  • Hug someone

  • Have sex

  • Drive

  • Share a meal with a person you love

  • Have a chance to catch up

  • Have a chance to learn

  • Walk in nature

  • Tell someone how you feel

  • Go to work

  • Have independence

  • Eat your favorite meal

  • Listen to a song you love

  • Dance

  • Laugh

  • Create

  • Be with your whole family

Our lives are filled with last moments that we never see coming. And because of that, this list could go on forever.

My time is almost up on living like I have only two years left. Next month I’ll be 52 and I plan on resetting the clock for another two years.

But these last couple of years have been pure magic for me.

During that time I’ve created a mental health event for the mountain biking community, started a newsletter, started a podcast, wrote new development courses, started writing my book, helped countless people, helped countless businesses, saved lives, forgave, healed, dared, grew in my confidence, grew in my skills, grew in my knowledge, grew in my communication, grew in my sense of purpose, and grew in how I love.

And most of it wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t realize there would be a last chance, a last day, or the last time I’d be able to do it.

So now what?

Ask yourself this question . . .

What would change for you today if you knew it would be the last time for you to ________________?

Whatever that answer is for you, go live it like there’s no tomorrow.
